Quality Assurance Inspector

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Quality Assurance Inspector (QAI) to join our team. Reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager, QAI will perform a role that supports the activities of the Quality Assurance Department in the areas of supplier Quality Control and Inspection of manufacturing activities.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Looking through drawing, blueprints, and specifications to understand the design requirements of products
  • Measuring product dimensions, examining the functionality of products, and comparing the final products to see if standards are met
  • Documenting inspection findings, and completing detailed reports and performance records
  • Interacting with engineering and manufacturing groups to find best resolution for critical discrepancies as applicable.

Required Qualifications

A strong technical background in quality control, inspection of large machinery and precision machined parts.

  • Strong technical knowledge in understanding the assembly drawings and identifying linked components into large Bill of Materials.
  • Practical working knowledge of ASTM & CSA Material Standards, ASME Inspection Standards, and CWB Welding Standards. ISO and European Standards would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of NDT Inspection processes and methods, NDT standards and heat treatment processes for steel.
  • Proficient in performing dimensional inspections of precision machined steel components to tight tolerances and able to use inspection instruments.
  • Skilled in the use of common business systems, Word, Excel, Outlook, Database MRP Systems, Web based applications such as Google Drive, and CAD systems.
  • Familiarity with principles of quality management system ISO 9001.
  • Must have a strong command of the English language and strong communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage time on multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work independently to complete tasks as assigned.
  • College level technical education or apprenticeship in trade related to manufacturing, steel fabrication processes or production and machining operations. University diploma in Mechanical Engineering a strong asset.

 

Work Environment:

 Typical shop office and manufacturing work environment. The employee may occasionally need to lift or move items weighing up to 25 lbs. and carry inspection equipment.

Travel Requirements:

Business Development Manager - Mining

The Manager of Business Development, Mining Segment owns execution of the sales strategy for profitable growth of the mine hoisting business.  Working under the Vice President of Business Development, the Business Development Manager will work collaboratively within the organization and pro-actively with Hepburn’s current and future customers to drive the sales process from opportunity identification to purchase order/contract.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education level.  Mechanical/Electrical Engineer, P Eng, MBA Preferred.
  • Experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience of progressive global Business Development experience with large mining  [or RAS/marine Industry] mechanical and electrical capital equipment projects. 
  • Demonstrated expert in the sales process from opportunity identification to purchase order/contract delivery including development of value propositions, proposal generation, stakeholder management, cost estimating, contract negotiation, program management, budgeting and experience with project P&Ls.
  • History of building and managing sales funnels with above average conversion rates.
  • Contracts and negotiation expertise with a track record of negotiating contracts with favorable terms and conditions to support new business and long-term business relationships.
  • Proven analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills to evaluate business opportunities and leverage knowledge and industry experience to identify and champion customer focused solutions.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead global sales and marketing for Hepburn’s mine hoisting [or RAS] business segment including new business, spares and field service offerings.

Intermediate/Senior Mechanical Engineer – Replenishment at Sea (RAS)

Candidates with a strong mechanical aptitude are encouraged to apply for this position. Typically, our
engineering staff are involved in all aspects of the equipment life cycle. In-office phases include scope
definition, bidding, design, and manufacturing support. Out-of-office work will include factory testing,
installation supervision, commissioning, and long-term operational support.

The design work includes detailed solid modeling design of welded and machined parts, hydraulic and
pneumatic circuit design, and FEM stress analysis, as well as the selection of purchased specialty
components such as bearings, couplings, gear reducers, brakes and hydraulic and electric motors. Our
products are customized to the requirements of each customer and manufactured under subcontract at
locations around the world.
The out-of-office field service will involve factory testing, installation support, commissioning and
troubleshooting. This will include travel to manufacturing and commissioning sites that in the past have
included Spain, Italy, France, Australia, India, and Taiwan. The successful candidate may be in the field
for approximately 20% of the time.

Core Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of five to ten years of experience in the design of heavy industrial or marine equipment
  • Solid working knowledge of industrial hydraulic systems, including closed loop hydrostatic drives
  • Strong design aptitude using 3D CAD
  • Bachelor Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering

Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Control and Automation)

The Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Control and Automation) will be based in our Toronto office with periodic travel for field service work to customer sites within Canada and internationally.  The role will involve the detailed design of control systems for mine hoists and the development of application software for integrated custom-built equipment. The role covers all aspects of the project life-cycle, from before the award of contract, to customer support after delivery of equipment. The field service work involves equipment audits, installation support, commissioning and troubleshooting. Responsibilities:

  • Performs detailed design of control systems, including single line diagrams, electrical schematics, bill of materials and specifications for electrical equipment builds.
  • Develops application software, including PLC program and operator interfaces (HMI).
  • Works in a project environment in close association with electrical and mechanical design engineers to produce integrated custom-built equipment.
  • Participates in equipment start-up and commissioning at customer sites in Canada and worldwide, including sign-off on all safety critical functions, and ensuring compliance with all relevant equipment and safety codes.
  • Provides field service support, including site inspections, service contracts, and emergency shut down situations at customer sites or remotely.
  • Generates and reviews equipment documentation including operating and maintenance manuals, safety compliance reports, electrical schematics, test procedures and specifications.

  • Travel within Canada and to customer sites globally for approximately 20-30% of the year.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 3-5 years experience in application, design, and commissioning of PLC-based control systems and HMI’s.
  • Preferred 3-5 years experience in application, design, or commissioning of AC Variable Frequency Drives (VFD).
  • Experience working as an electrical or control and automation engineer.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written English.
  • Motivated, able to plan and execute work to project schedules.
  • Familiarity with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) process applications is preferable.

The role includes field service work that involves equipment audits, installation support, commissioning and troubleshooting.  The field service work in this role will include travel to mines and mining projects in Canada, USA, Mexico, Mongolia, Indonesia, Ireland, Peru, Morocco and Australia. After the initial familiarization period of 6 to 12months, the Intermediate/Senior Electrical Engineer (Controls and Automation) could expect to be assigned travel assignments and they may be in the field for approximately 20%  - 30% of the time.

Contract Administrator

The Contract Administrator will work under general supervision of the Project Manager.

Performs the function of Contract Administrator using sound judgment and application of procurement and logistics best practices, standards and policies, managing work and attaining of business objectives while adhering to budgets and deadlines.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Responsible for spare parts orders inquiries and request for quotations (RFQ) from receipt of inquiry request to submission of proposal, in a timely fashion and in accordance to ISO standards and procedures.

  • Update and maintain database to produce reliable status reporting systems.
  • Define scope in conjunction of engineering and quality requirements.
  • Obtain quotes from suppliers and subcontractors and negotiate prices and terms.
  • Prepare cost estimates and review with respective functions ahead of proposal release.
  • Prepare Proposal Letter and submit to the customer
  • Follow up on proposals status with customer and attend to clarifications as needed.
  • Ensure received purchase orders’ scope and terms and conditions conformity to proposal.
  • Acknowledge purchase orders in a timely fashion with HEI assigned reference and estimated delivery.
  • Coordinate orders execution among cross functional team including Engineering, Quality, Finance as well as subcontracts and vendors.
  • Ensure adherence to contractual clauses and terms including documentation, payment, invoicing, bonds, letter of credits, insurance and applicable terms and conditions.
  • Accountable for on time delivery (OTD) for products and services and margins retention.
  • Support purchasing and logistical efforts for capital and major projects to ISO standards.
  • Accountable for proposals and purchase orders accuracy, reliability and compliance to ISO.
  • Conform to quality and health safety requirements at all times and promote the highest standards among supply chain and subcontractors.
  • Obtain non-disclosure confidentiality agreements from suppliers before drawings release.
  • Ensure latest and released drawing revisions with relevant QA requirements, and documentation requirements are communicated to suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Participate in periodical progress review meetings for spare parts and projects as needed.
  • Identify risks and assess impact on contract performance and develop response plans.
  • Keep track of contract changes, update delivery impact and document approvals.
  • Maintain complete, reliable and organized electronic filing folders
  • Track incoming and outgoing freight.
  • Maintain an inventory of spare parts.
  • Package parts and consolidate small packages for shipment, and ensure packaging and labelling meets contractual requirements.
  • Prepare all required shipping documentation, packing lists, customs invoices, B13’s, certificates, labels.
  • Be prepared to travel to local vendor premises for inspection/labelling purchased components.
  • Verify incoming shipments against the packing slip and purchase order
  • Receive parts in HEI database and file packing slips electronically on HEI Server
  • Distribute the received parts in accordance with project requirements.
  • Support purchasing and logistical efforts for MRO and office supplies

Required Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary education related to Business and/or Technical Studies.
  • Experience in specifying & procuring mechanical and electrical components and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in logistics, transportation, shipping terms and customs procedures.
  • Experience with utilising MS Office, Databases & MRP systems.

Intermediate Mechanical Engineer - Heavy Equipment Design

The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer will be based in our Toronto office and work under the general supervision of the Manager, Mechanical Engineering.  The work is assigned in terms of objectives, relative priorities and critical areas that interface work with other units. Work is carried out within broad guidelines; however informed guidance is available. Completed work is reviewed for attainment of objectives and adherence to deadline

Typically, our engineering employees are involved in all aspects of the equipment life cycle including scope definition, bidding, design, manufacture, assembly, installation-commissioning, field service plus long-term operational support.

The in-house design includes detailed solid modeling design, hydraulic circuit design, gear design, and FEM stress analysis, as well as the selection of purchased specialty components such as bearings, couplings, and brakes.  Our products are custom designed and built from the ground up with Hepburn procuring heavy mill-run plate, forgings and castings followed by rolling, fabrication, machining and inspection.

While the primary focus of this position is heavy machine design, some field service will be required for installation support and commissioning.  Field service could include travel to mining areas in Canada, USA, Mexico, Mongolia, Indonesia, Ireland, Peru, Morocco, Australia, etc. for mining projects.  Navy commissioning sites include Spain, Italy, Australia, India, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan. After the initial training period of about one year, the engineer could expect to be assigned some assignments that would involve travel for approximately 15% of the time.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in progressing the detailed design solution including 3D modelling, hydraulic systems, specification for gearboxes, stress analysis, FEA, detailed BOMs & specifications for mechanical equipment build.
  • Supports start-up and commissioning of equipment, including sign-off on all safety critical functions. Ensures compliance with all relevant equipment and safety regulations and codes applicable.
  • Provides leadership in detailed review of customer RFQ packages and supports finding a robust technical solution with an itemized BOM and estimated hours to complete the work. Obtains estimates from approved vendors in support of bid submission.  Takes a leadership role in presenting the proposed solution to the customer in a Technical Bid review.
  • Supports training of less experienced engineers.
  • Works in a project environment in close association with electrical design engineers to produce integrated custom-built equipment.
  • Supports procurement in review of detailed vendor proposals for compliance to design criteria.
  • Produces equipment documentation including operating and maintenance manuals, safety compliance reports and finalized design documentation.
  • Initiates plans and ideas for cost reduction and/or quality improvement measures.

About you / qualifications:

Electrical Field Service Technician/Engineer

The Electrical Field Service Technician/Engineer will travel to customer sites to provide customer support, manage installation, conduct equipment inspections and testing, troubleshoot technical issues, assist with commissioning, prepare reports and provide training. The Technician will use sound judgment and ensure high quality standards and positive customer relations.  

Responsibilities:

Travel to customer/supplier sites in Canada and internationally, up to 50% of the year, to perform the following:

  • Equipment inspections / audits;
  • Troubleshooting technical issues;
  • Factory acceptance testing;
  • Installation support and supervision;
  • Assist commissioning team on large commissioning projects;
  • Provide training to operators and electricians.

Complete the following activities in the office:

  • Prepare reports for the customer for work performed in the field;
  • Prepare procedures to perform inspections and audits;
  • Prepare training materials for customers;
  • Provide remote support to customers to troubleshoot problems with equipment;
  • Update minor electrical schematic drawing to reflect changes made in the field;
  • Assist in estimating field service costs.

Education/Designation:

  • Electrical Engineering technician or technologist diploma or;
  • Electrical Engineering degree
  • Red Seal Industrial Electrician designation or Ontario 309A is an asset;

Requirements:

  • At least five years’ experience in a technical electrical role with some hands-on experience with maintenance or troubleshooting of the following:
    • PLC based control systems;
    • Electrical equipment including transformers, motors, variable frequency drives, motor control centres and switchgears;
  • Experience reading electrical drawings to troubleshoot equipment issues;
  • Experience using AutoCAD is preferred;
