Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Manager

The Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Manager is a full-time position based in our Toronto, Ontario office. The ILS Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Integrated Logistics Support for multiple clients with varied ILS requirements and ensuring compliance to contractual ILS requirements. The ILS Manager will also be responsible for preparing compliance matrices and estimating ILS effort for new projects. The ILS Manager will be responsible for managing a small team of ILS Analysts and Technical Writers.

The role of the ILS manager is a working manager, that will be responsible for developing the maintenance and support solutions for HEI products, conducting ILS tasks throughout the all phases of a product’s life cycle, including development projects, delivery programs or in-service product sustainment.

 

 

Hepburn Engineering Inc is a successful medium-sized Toronto based company that designs, builds and commissions heavy lifting equipment including mine hoists and replenishment-at-sea transfer systems for customers around the world. Hepburn Engineering integrates custom-designed mechanical equipment with complex controls, hydraulics and electrical drives in the range up to 10,000 HP.

Reporting Structure / Supervision:

Reports to the Quality Assurance Manager or his designee.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Review contracts to ensure compliance for ILS deliverables.
  • Liaise with customers to resolve questions and provide updates on project ILS timelines.
  • Liaise with engineering to provide clarification on impacts to ILS deliverables due to design or other systems changes.
  • Manage a small team of Technical Writers/ILS Analysts.
  • Prepare various ILS documentation in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Define the support concept and establish the resources required to maintain HEI products.
  • Analyze HEI systems and equipment, determining the requirements for tools, test equipment, spare parts and consumables.
  • Produce the maintenance and support plan for the support of equipment and systems.
  • Review purchase orders to ensure compliance for ILS requirements is flowed through to the supply chain.
  • Prepare preventive and corrective maintenance procedures according to contractual requirements.
  • Be in charge of the development of technical manuals for installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of HEI equipment.
  • Review design documentation to perform spares analysis and catalogue spares data according to contract requirements.
  • Manage compliance of Hepburn manuals with applicable commercial and government/military standards.
  • Work with engineers to create maintenance procedures using a systematic approach.
  • Develop packaging, handling, storage and transportation requirements.
  • Prepare reliability and maintainability data as required.
  • Contribute to FMECA analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-year experience of logistics engineering in a defense industry ILS environment.
  • Demonstrated organization with capacity to prioritize competing deliverables.
  • Demonstrate strong written and oral communication in the English language.
  • Attention to detail when reviewing contracts.
  • Must have a Mechanical and/or Electrical aptitude and demonstrated ability to quickly understand and apply technical concepts and principles to solve problems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time on multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work independently to complete tasks as assigned.
  • Knowledge and application of military logistic processes and standards, including MIL-STD188-2B, GEIA 0007, MIL-PRF-49506, S-series specifications or DEF-STAN 00-60 is an asset.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate scope with customers while maintaining a positive working relationship.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mechanical / Electrical Engineering Technologist or Technician or equivalent post-secondary  qualification from the Armed Forces
  • Experience with aftermarket support in the defense industry.
  • Experience in a customer facing role.
  • Experience managing a team of direct or indirect reports.
  • Experience using Adobe Illustrator.
  • Proficiency using Madcap Flare or Similar XML Authoring Tools.
  • Attention to detail when formatting and reviewing technical manuals.

Salary range is $90k-$130k depending on experience. Hepburn Engineering includes medical benefits

Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Control and Automation)

The Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Control and Automation) will be based in our Toronto office and work under the general supervision of the Principal Electrical Engineer.  You will perform the function of Intermediate Electrical Engineer, using sound judgment and application of standards and policies, managing work and attaining of business objectives while adhering to deadlines.

Thanks to our rapid growth, we are seeking to hire a full time Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Control and Automation) with a focus on hoisting system control and automation to help us continue our upward trajectory. Typically, our engineering employees are involved in all aspects of the equipment life cycle including scope definition, bidding, design, manufacture, assembly, installation-commissioning, field service plus long-term operational support.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Performs detailed electrical design of mine hoist control systems, including SLD, Control Narratives, PLC’s, detailed BOM’s, and specifications for electrical equipment builds.
  • Develops PLC and HMI programs for Safety Critical hoisting applications.
  • Works in a project environment in close association with electrical and mechanical design engineers to produce integrated custom-built equipment.
  • Participates in equipment start-up and commissioning at customer mine sites in Canada and worldwide, including sign-off on all safety critical functions, and ensuring compliance with all relevant equipment and safety codes applicable.
  • Provides field service support, including site inspections, service contracts, and emergency shut down situations at customer mine sites or through remote access.
  • Generates and reviews equipment documentation including operating and maintenance manuals, safety compliance reports, electrical schematics, test procedures and specifications. Ensures standards and finalized design documentation, are maintained and controlled in compliance with company Intellectual Property rules and guidelines.
  • Work in accordance with Hepburn Engineering Inc. (HEI) Policies, Quality Management System (QMS) standards and procedures.
  • Employee is required to wear all assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as, safety glasses, hard hat, safety boots, high visibility protective clothing, etc.
  • Perform all work in a safe manner and in compliance with Hepburn Engineering Inc. Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Master’ Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferable
  • 3-6 years experience in application, design, or commissioning of PLC-based control systems and HMI’s.
  • Preferred 3-6 years experience in application, design, or commissioning of AC Variable Frequency Drives (VFD).
  • Experience working as an electrical or control and automation engineer in the mining or metals industry.
  • Exceptional, organizational and communication skills in both verbal and written English.
  • Motivated, able to plan and execute work to project schedules.
  • Working experience with AutoCAD Electrical, Allen-Bradley PLC, HMI Programming and MS Office suite.
  • Familiar with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) process applications

 

The role includes field service work that involves equipment audits, installation support, commissioning and troubleshooting.  The field service work in this role will include travel to mines and mining projects in Canada, USA, Mexico, Mongolia, Indonesia, Ireland, Peru, Morocco and Australia. After the initial familiarization period of 6 to 12months, the Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Controls and Automation) could expect to be assigned travel assignments and they may be in the field for approximately 20%  - 30% of the time.

 

Salary range is $90k-$110k depending on experience. Hepburn Engineering includes medical benefits and field work compensation policy.

Intermediate/Senior Mechanical Engineer – Replenishment at Sea (RAS)

Candidates with a strong mechanical aptitude are encouraged to apply for this position. Typically, our
engineering staff are involved in all aspects of the equipment life cycle. In-office phases include scope
definition, bidding, design, and manufacturing support. Out-of-office work will include factory testing,
installation supervision, commissioning, and long-term operational support.

The design work includes detailed solid modeling design of welded and machined parts, hydraulic and
pneumatic circuit design, and FEM stress analysis, as well as the selection of purchased specialty
components such as bearings, couplings, gear reducers, brakes and hydraulic and electric motors. Our
products are customized to the requirements of each customer and manufactured under subcontract at
locations around the world.
The out-of-office field service will involve factory testing, installation support, commissioning and
troubleshooting. This will include travel to manufacturing and commissioning sites that in the past have
included Spain, Italy, France, Australia, India, and Taiwan. The successful candidate may be in the field
for approximately 20% of the time.

Core Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of five to ten years of experience in the design of heavy industrial or marine equipment
  • Solid working knowledge of industrial hydraulic systems, including closed loop hydrostatic drives
  • Strong design aptitude using 3D CAD
  • Bachelor Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer or eligibility
  • Interest in and ability to travel to support company supplied equipment

Other Relevant Skills

  • Excellent English communication skills both verbal and written
  • Marine equipment design experience
  • Comfortable with the specification of electric motors and interfacing with electrical engineering for control schemes
