Senior Legal Counsel

Hepburn Engineering Inc. is a medium sized, highly-skilled engineering firm located in Toronto, ON (Etobicoke). We design and supply safe, reliable 'hoists and winches' to the mining industry, and 'replenishment-at-sea' equipment to blue water navies all around the world.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be pragmatic, collaborative, and business-minded.
- Demonstrate sound legal and business judgment to make recommendations, and solve legal and business problems, often within tight deadlines.
- Be a seasoned lawyer who can play a vital role in supporting the commercial contracting process, including drafting, amending and negotiating contracts.
- Manage contract related work for Hepburn’s diverse customer base with contracts that vary from smaller-value contracts to large-value and complex contracts, international in scope and taking up to several months to finalize.
- Comfortably navigate procurement rules set up either by private enterprises or through government regulations.
- Bring strong integrity, knowledge and background in general corporate, commercial and contract law; and serve as a trusted advisor to Senior Management, Procurement, Finance, Sales, Human Resources and Information Technology teams.
Our new in-house Senior Legal Counsel is someone who is comfortable liaising with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, and keeps their professional knowledge up to date in the areas of commercial agreements, purchasing contracts, regulatory and compliance requirements, federal regulations for Controlled Goods, Employment Standards and other applicable legislation.
Requirements:
- B./J.D. from an accredited law school and an active member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- A minimum 8+ years of relevant commercial/contract law work experience, preferably in a law firm or as in-house Counsel with an engineering, construction or technical project/service company
- Professional-level proficiency in English, including excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in any of French, Spanish or Italian language is a plus.
- Comfortable working onsite, in-office.

Hepburn Engineering Inc. is a medium sized, highly-skilled engineering firm located in Toronto, ON (Etobicoke). We design and supply safe, reliable 'hoists and winches' to the mining industry, and 'replenishment-at-sea' equipment to blue water navies all around the world.
The primary responsibility of this role is to lead/support the functional safety activities relating to the development and maintenance of Hepburn Engineering Inc.’s (HEI) equipment and systems. As a member of the Engineering team, the Functional Safety Engineer / Specialist will collaborate cross-functionally with domain experts to ensure delivery of the company’s functional safety projects, initiatives and related short and long-term goals.
Our ideal Functional Safety expert will:
- Be a system-level thinker, with strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Develop system and software architecture documentation for existing solutions as required to meet functional safety standards
- Define relevant safety requirements and/or test specifications, as needed.
- Develops documentation and related deliverables as part of the functional safety system lifecycle.
- Work in collaboration with design engineers, quality assurance and other functions to advance critical functional safety initiatives and improvement opportunities.
- Bring proven project management skills, with an ability to partner with and influence internal and external project stakeholders, experts and consultants.
- Have knowledge of Safety Integrity Level (SIL).
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
- Holds a relevant Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and/or a Functional Safety designation.
- Knowledge of systems engineering and the ability to apply it in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Prior work experience in functional safety standards and certification(s). Experience in the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and ISO 13849 strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Safety Analysis methods: Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Dependent Failure Analysis (DFA).
- Strong project/program management skills.

Quality Assurance Analyst

The Quality Assurance (QA) Analyst will play a key role supporting the various analysis, documentation and administration activities of the QA Department. The QA Analyst will also support in the areas of supplier Quality Documentation Verification, Validation and Quality Control, as well as supplier inspection activities.
About the day-to-day:
Quality Documentation Verification and Validation:
- Review supplier quality documentation for completeness and accuracy to engineering drawings and purchasing requirements.
- Compile Quality Assurance data packages for customers and internal records.
- Work with suppliers to ensure quality standards and engineering requirements are met as defined in the Purchase Order or contract.
- Monitor compliance of suppliers to quality requirements and follow-up with suppliers as required to complete submission requirements.
- Generate and monitor Inspection and Test Plans for project specific requirements.
- Ensure supplier quality documentation are correctly identified and properly stored.
Quality Control and Inspection Support:
- Occasionally, visit suppliers to assist with mechanical inspections of equipment.
- Occasionally, assist with the verification and inspections of welded fabrications, machined parts, and forging components of various sizes.
- Generate inspection reports after inspections as required.
About you / qualifications:
- 3+ years of relevant work experience in quality assurance within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- University degree, Engineering EIT (engineer in training) or recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline, or;
- Advanced College level technical education or apprenticeship in manufacturing, steel fabrication processes or production.
- Practical working knowledge of ASTM Material Standards, ASME Inspection Standards, ISO and European Standards, and CWB Welding Standards.
- Strong practical knowledge of NDT Inspection processes and methods and heat treatment processes for steel is an asset.
- Strong technical background focused on quality control and manufacturing methods of large steel fabrications, structural steel weldments, assembly processes and industrial coatings and painting is an asset.
- Knowledge of performing dimensional inspections of precision machined steel components to tight tolerances and able to use precision inspection instruments is an asset.
- Skilled in the use of common business systems, Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Database MRP Systems, and CAD systems.
- Must have a strong command of the English language, both verbal and written, and strong communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage time on multiple simultaneous projects.
- Ability to work independently to complete tasks as assigned.
- Have a valid driver’s license and own transportation for local travel.

Intermediate / Senior Mechanical Engineer - Mining

The Engineer will be involved in all aspects of the equipment’s life cycle, including: scope definition, bidding, design, manufacture, assembly,
installation-commissioning, field service, plus long-term operational support.The in-house design includes detailed solid modeling design, hydraulic circuit
design, gear design, and FEM stress analysis, as well as the selection of purchased specialty components such as bearings, couplings, and brakes. Our
products are custom designed and built from the ground up with Hepburn procuring heavy mill-run plate, forgings, and castings followed by rolling,
fabrication, machining, and inspection.
What You will do:
- Provide leadership in progressing the detailed design solution including 3D modelling, hydraulic systems, specification for gearboxes, stress analysis, FEA, detailed BOMs & specifications for mechanical equipment build.
- Support start-up and commissioning of equipment, including sign-off on all safety-critical functions.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant equipment and safety regulations and codes applicable.
- Provide leadership in detailed review of customer RFQ packages and support finding a robust technical solution with an itemized BOM and estimated hours to complete the work.
- Obtain estimates from approved vendors in support of bid submission.
- Take a leadership role in presenting the proposed solution to the customer in a Technical Bid review.
- Support training of less experienced engineers.
- Work in a project environment in close association with electrical design engineers to produce integrated custom-built equipment.
- Support procurement in review of detailed vendor proposals for compliance to design criteria.
- Produce equipment documentation including operating and maintenance manuals, safety compliance reports, and finalized design documentation.
- Initiate plans and ideas for cost reduction and/or quality improvement measures.
- Travel within North America and internationally for approximately 20% of the time. Typical trips range from a few days to approximately 3 weeks maximum.
About you / qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- Five years or more of experience in Mechanical Engineering.
- Strong design aptitude with practical, hands-on experience.
- Experience in design and commissioning of Safety Critical Mechanical systems.
- Experience with CAD and FEA.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in the English language.
- Professional Engineer or eligibility.
- Interest in travel to support design work.
- Experience with site work and commissioning including inspections, alignment checks, hydraulic commissioning, and general mechanical skills.
